The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree with a specialty area in social studies requires 36 semester credit hours. Candidates must complete a minimum of 18 hours in the social studies specialty, the professional education core (12 hours), and secondary education electives (6 hours). A written comprehensive examination in the general science specialization and the professional education core and/or electives is required. Advanced candidates seeking licensure must also complete the SOE portfolio, courses in Behavior Management and Arkansas History, and the student teaching experience.

Track 2- Candidates without Licensure in Social Studies Education

These candidates complete a minimum of thirty-six (36) graduate hours for a Master’s degree which includes: fifteen (15) hours of general core courses, a minimum of eighteen (18) hours of specialty courses, and a minimum of three (3) hours of electives. Capstone Event: Graduate Comprehensive Examination.

Passing Praxis I scores are required for admission to degree candidacy (by the time twelve (12) graduate hours have been completed). Those without a license in Secondary Social Studies Education must also complete all listed prerequisites-nine (9) hours of undergraduate course requirements (if equivalent courses were not taken as an undergraduate), a School of Education Portfolio (Live Text) and Student Teaching: GEDU 5601 Student Teaching - Clinical (6 hours) and GEDU 5602 Student Teaching - Practicum (6 hours). Candidates must also pass Praxis II exams for Social Studies Licensure Test Requirements in the State of Arkansas.
