The Master of Education in Secondary Education degree with a specialty area in General Science (life/earth science OR physical/earth science) requires a minimum of 36 semester credit hours. Candidates must complete a 12 hour professional education core, a 9 hour required specialization core, a 12 hour life science or physical science concentration, and a 3 hour (minimum) educational foundation elective. A written comprehensive examination in the general science specialization and the professional education core and/or electives is required. Advanced candidates seeking licensure must also complete the SOE portfolio, courses in Behavior Management and Arkansas History, and the student teaching experience.

Track 1 - Licensure
Candidates with an Initial/Standard License in Life/Earth Science (Biology) or Physical/Earth Science (Chemistry) Education
Professional Education Requirements - 15 Hours
Educational Foundation/Elective Courses - 3 Hours
Advisor will recommend elective
Required Specialization Core - 3 Hours
Life Science Concentration - 12 Hours
For students in the Life/Earth Science concentration
Physical Science Concentration - 12 Hours
For students in the Physical/Earth Science concentration
Science Elective - 3 Hours
Advisor will recommend elective.
Track 2- Candidates without Licensure in General Science Education
These candidates complete a minimum of thirty-six (36) graduate hours for a Master’s degree which includes: fifteen (15) hours of general core courses, a minimum of eighteen (18) hours of specialty courses, and a minimum of three (3) hours of electives. Capstone Event: Graduate Comprehensive Examination.
Passing Praxis I scores are required for admission to degree candidacy (by the time twelve (12) graduate hours have been completed). Those without a license in Secondary General Science Education must also complete all listed prerequisites - nine (9) hours of undergraduate course requirements (if equivalent courses were not taken as an undergraduate), complete the School of Education Portfolio (Live Text), and Student Teaching: GEDU 5601 Student Teaching - Clinical (6 hours) and GEDU 5602 Student Teaching - Practicum (6 hours) after all courses have been taken. Candidates must also pass Praxis II exams for Life/Earth Science Licensure Test Requirements or Physical/Earth Science Licensure Test Requirements in the State of Arkansas.
