Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.)

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree is for graduate level students or professionals who want to secure initial licensure to teach. Thus, it is a pre-service degree that offers non-licensed teachers education courses in order to meet Arkansas licensure requirements. It emphasizes advanced coursework to enhance the students’ knowledge of content in the respective content areas. The M.A.T. degree offers options in elementary, middle level education, secondary education, and broad range option which requires 36 semester credit hours that includes two full-time teaching internships in a public school setting. A written comprehensive examination in specialty courses and educational foundation courses and an education portfolio are required. The M.A.T. degree is designed to be completed in one year: two summer sessions, and a fall and spring session. In addition, the M.A.T. offers courses such as the M.A.T. Institute and six hours of program internships, each devoted to instruction in Pathwise, classroom management, teacher professionalism, parental involvement, adolescent development, history and philosophy of education, current issues and trends in education, and other such topics essential for successful teaching. The internships allow novice teachers opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in teaching and learning styles, lesson design, evaluation techniques, and curriculum development in their school settings under the supervision of university faculty.
