The Multimedia Communication program aims to assist students in understanding the process of communication and the practice of the dramatic arts, including fundamental concepts and their application through effective communication and artistry. The program emphasizes theory, methodology and art. It seeks to develop aesthetic awareness and dynamic interaction among students, to encourage response to humanistic values inherent in literature and art and to enhance the quality of student creativity. Students are afforded opportunities to learn about themselves and their relationship to others in a social system as they develop analytical thinking, disciplined curiosity, motivation and professional skills.

The Multimedia Communication program offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications with options in Multimedia Production, Multimedia News, and Public Relations along with a minor in Mass Communications.

Admission Requirements

To be fully admitted into the Department of Multimedia Communication, the student must declare a major in Mass Communications, declaring one of the following three options: a) Multimedia Production, b) Multimedia News, or c) Public Relations and meet the following criteria:

  • Be classified at least as a sophomore with a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Complete an application for departmental admission
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.5 in the major
  • Complete ENGL 1311   and ENGL 1321   with a minimum grade of “C”

To receive conditional admission into the Department of Multimedia Communication, the student must declare a major in a) Multimedia Production, b) Multimedia News, or c) Public Relations are meet the following criteria:

  • Be classified at least as a sophomore with a GPA of at least 2.25 on a 4.0 scale
  • Complete an application for departmental admission
  • Meet with assigned advisor and turn in monthly progress reports for each course enrolled
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.5 in the major

Mission:

The primary mission of the Department of Multimedia Communication is to prepare the next generation of practitioners in mass communications. To this end, the department offers instruction in Public Relations, Multimedia News, and Multimedia Production through print media, broadcast outlets, and other communication venues such as conferences, exhibits, practical experience, documentaries and entrepreneurial opportunities.  In addition, the program maintains a quality faculty that demonstrates excellence both in the classroom and in creative and scholarly pursuits. The program also provides optimal facilities and resources to support a dynamic learning environment, and presents as an extension of its teaching mission - educational initiatives and portfolio development.

The primary goal of the program is to develop and cultivate the qualities of steadfastness, perseverance, and technical competence within our students by shaping and molding active and creative minds with skills in: audio/video production, media management, multimedia design, journalism, public relations and broadcast. The program also strengthens students scholarly and culturally, which will allow students to diversify the broadcast and print fields with innovative ideas.

Goals:

Within this context, four major goals guide the operation of the Department of Multimedia Communication:

  1. To provide with knowledge of the practical skills appropriate for their communication disciplines of interest.
  2. To develop in students an interest in research and quantitative applications relevant and appropriate to journalism and mass communications.
  3. To develop in students an understanding of the history of mass communications and its importance to various cultures in society.
  4. To develop an interest in the theories of mass communications and how they are applied to the journalism and mass communications profession.
